7 Ways to Cure Your (Shopping Cart) Abandonment Issues [Infographic]

September 03, 2015 at 01:00PM

You know the drill: you find yourself clicking through an online shopping site, adding a couple shirts or laptop stickers to your shopping cart, and once you’re satisfied, you decide to check out. However, something stops you, like millions of online shoppers, from completing the process.

Online retailers everywhere have fallen victim to shopping cart abandonment, which keeps a shocking 68% of shoppers from completing their online transactions. In fact, according to a new infographic from Ripen eCommerce, $3.38 trillion will be forfeited in abandoned shopping carts around the world in 2015.

Follow these seven simple tips to cure your shopping cart abandonment issues and boost your online revenue, then check out the infographic below to take a deeper dive.

Minimize distractions.

Conversions on ecommerce sites grew by 11.4% when retailers simplified their sites and used large call-to-action buttons. Boost your sales by increasing the size and improving the clarity of your calls-to-action.

Emphasize your customer service resources.

74% of consumers have cited good customer service as a reason they spent more money online. Installing live chat for immediate help during shopping and checking out could persuade a customer to click “pay now” more often.

Make your shoppers feel safe.

When online retailers implemented a security badge on their checkout pages, sales increased by 4-6%. Create a sense of security with badges affirming that your site’s payments are secure.

Make the “back” button irrelevant.

Your browser’s “back” button is online shopping kryptonite. In fact, 24% of shoppers claim that they have abandoned their carts because navigating the website was too complicated. A “continue shopping” button for your website sidesteps the need to use a browser’s navigation.

Bypass account registration.

About 21% of cart abandonment cases are due to time constraints while shopping. By offering a guest checkout option, shoppers will be more willing to purchase what’s in their carts simply because it takes less time to do so.

Emphasize your return policy.

Your online return policy is read by 66% of online shoppers on your site, so if it’s inconvenient or inaccessible, it will turns shoppers away from your site. To fix this, set up a window or provide a summary of a rundown of your policy that is accessible without being intrusive.

Avoid exorbitant shipping costs.

Shipping costs are a critical part of the decision to make an online purchase for about 73% of online shoppers. Make sure shipping costs aren’t unexpectedly high and offer free shipping whenever possible.

In short, a website that is user-friendly and easily navigable will make it harder for shoppers to leave without converting. But with just a few small tweaks, you can say goodbye to your abandonment issues and hello to increased sales.
